Making your vision a reality
An Unusual Field Trip
March 31, 2004 - Falls Church, VA

Dante Gonzalez won something today he really didn't expect: An area rug from CARPET ONE Tysons. This was final surprise on a field trip for the Interior and Fashion Design Class from Marshall High School, Falls Church, which featured an Introduction to Flooring at this upscale Idylwood Plaza flooring dealer.

According to Ann Wingen who teaches this class, "I wanted to expose my students to different concepts of flooring, everything from carpet to resilient, laminate, hardwood, and ceramic. I was looking for flooring myself and found that CARPET ONE Tysons had an excellent selection, including area rugs." With this idea in mind, Ann talked with Jacki Vergot, Office Coordinator for CARPET ONE Tysons, 7501-G, Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, and arranged the 9:30 am visit for some 20 students.

Barry Levine, senior sales associate at CARPET ONE Tysons, was well prepared with an explanation of the different types of flooring, including how tufted carpet originated (from the manufacture of bedspreads). All got a laugh when one student asked, "Did they put the bedspreads on the floor?" Barry said, "What a great question--I don't really know, but I wouldn't be surprised." The students were amazed at the variety of carpet textures and colors and wanted to know where to put various types of carpet.

Over the 90-minute visit, students moved from one flooring venue to another with brief stops for explanations of how flooring might be used. "American Cherry hardwood is quite popular but is not nearly as hard as Oak and will show more surface damage in heavy traffic areas. Yes, you should use some of the newer laminate products in kitchen areas rather than solid hardwood since it is more resistant to moisture. A very light colored carpet may be used in more formal areas but must be regularly cleaned."

As the students got ready to leave they posed for a picture. There was much kidding about the drawing for an area rug. Imagine their surprise when Dante was the winner. No, he didn't have to take it with him--he will bring his parents in to pick up the rug.
